On Friday, March 18th, a large group of juniors and seniors volunteered their time at Deering High School for the organization Feed My Starving Children. This non-for-profit organization packs and distributes meals to starving families across the globe. As volunteers, students were able to help with this process by packing meals of vitamins, vegetables, soy, and rice. In just under two hours, Westbrook students, along with those from other surrounding High Schools, packed over 7,000 meals.

According to a WHS senior, Dana Ledue, “It was a huge eye opener that just a few hours can make such a difference.” Students were able to see this difference first hand with the story of little Emma. At two and a half years old, Emma only weighed nine pounds, but through the support of Feed My Starving Children, he and his family received the nutrition they needed to survive. With what the students packed on Friday, two hundred and two children will receive a meal per day for one whole year.

In another interview, Courtney LeClair stated, “I thought it was a really fun experience and it felt good to think we’re giving back to the world and helping our families in need. It was also a really friendly and “feel good” environment. I would definitely do it again.” Luckily, Feed My Starving Children will be returning as an annual event.

This program hosts many fundraisers and events, and if you would like to learn more, please visit their website at www.fmsc.org.
